Too Little, Too Late

Filed under: Politics — cangrejero @ 7:54 pm

First, as stated by my inestimable colleague Mr. Hayse, I introduce myself as Cangrejero.  I’m honored to be here, and very happy to work with Toby, a man I would consider a dear friend despite never coming within 2900 miles of his presence.  If you would like to know more about me, you can check 500 or so posts of my rambling over at The Midpoint.  Feel free to drop by.

I would like to start by talking about Colin Powell.  I doubt I’m alone in having remembered a time when I thought of General Powell fondly.  Sure, he was always a Republican, but something seemed… different about him.  He had an air of honesty and accountability about him which made him stand out in an administration which lacked both.  As a young college student, I (regretfully) admit to being a bit swept up by the possibility of his running for the 1996 Presidential nomination, a stance which I attribute to sheer ignorance and jadedness with the political landscape of the time.  Nevertheless, he would later seem a glimmer of hope after the disastrous election of George W. Bush in 2000.  Yes, we had elected a fuckup, but at least Mr. Powell would keep him from destroying the planet, or so I thought.

I was in graduate school when Mr. Powell stood before the world and told us there was “no doubt in [his] mind that Saddam Hussein has biological weapons and the capability to rapidly produce more, many more,”  this amid reports that he thought the whole idea was “bullshit.”

I remember his word, even among us on the left, was strong enough affirmation for many that this war had to go on.  5+ years later, and we all know that his assertion, as well as his word, weren’t worth the paper upon which they were printed.  Powell was spared much of the criticism levied upon the other architects of the war, but hindsight has shown he likely deserves much much more.  By the time of his November 15, 2004 resignation (2 weeks after he could have helped save us from the disastrous 2nd term of W), all doubts would be dissipated.

The emergent pattern points to the story of a man who put his career before doing what’s right every single time.  More a whistle-swallower than a whistle-blower.  So here we stand today, with the announcement of his support for Sen. Obama in the upcoming presidential election.

I wish I was writing this on the eve of the DNC instead of the election.  Imagine what Powell’s support could have meant for the rough early months of the campaign!  For while we see him as the opportunist he is, it is certainly possible that he could have swayed right-leaning independants early on.  Making the announcement when he did, however, implies that he saw the direction the wind was blowing, and aligned himself with it as he has always done, likely in an attempt to curry favor with an incoming Obama administration which has openly stated its desire to work across party lines.

So while he receives praise from pundits and politicians alike for his “courage,” I say “Thanks but no thanks” to yet another rat jumping from the sinking ship which is 2008’s GOP.

Update: Right on time.

I am proud to let y’all know that a new blogger will be adding to the mix here at Donkey Punch.

Cangrejero from The Midpoint has accepted my offer to have him join the “editorial” staff of good old Donkey Punch.

I have liked the cut of his jib for some time, and I am a less than regular poster, so I’d say its a win-win situation (for me.)

Was John McCain responsible for the deaths of over a hundred sailors?

John McCain was a central figure in one of the worst Navy fires in post-WWII US history.

There are several versions of this story.  From the USS Forestal Museum web site:

At 10:52 A.M. on July 29, the second launch was being readied when a Zuni rocket accidentally fired from an F-4 Phantom parked on the starboard side of the flight deck aft of the island.  The missile streaked across the deck into a 400 gallon belly fuel tank on  a parked  A-4D Skyhawk.  The ruptured tank  spew highly flammable JP-5 fuel onto the deck which ignited spreading flames over the flight deck under other fully loaded aircraft ready for launch. The ensuing fire caused ordinance to explode and other rockets to ignite. Spread by the wind, the flames engulfed the aft end of the stricken ship turning the flight deck into a blazing inferno..  Berthing spaces immediately below the flight deck became death traps for fifty men, while other crewmen were blown overboard by the explosion.

John McCain was in the pilot of the Skyhawk A-4D. This is where the facts get a bit hazy. From the Rock Creek Free Press:

It is believed by many crewmen and those who have investigated the case that McCain deliberately “wet-started” his A-4E to shake up the guy in the plane behind his A-4. “Wet-starts”, done either deliberately or accidentally, shoot a large flame from the tail of the aircraft.

In McCain’s case, the “wet-start” apparently “cooked off” and launched the Zuni rocket from the rear F-4 that touched off the explosions and massive fire. The F-4 pilot was reportedly killed in the conflagration. “Wet starting” was apparently a common practice among young “hot-dog” pilots.

So the story seems to be that McCAin wet-started his engine to scare the pilot behind him, which caused a Zuni missle to fire into his fuel tank. Evidently the bombs mounted on his plane were 1000 pound pre-WWII bombs placed on 500 pound mounts. At least one of these bombs fell off of its shoddy mount and ‘cooked off’ blowing a huge hole in the carrier deck which allowed a bunch of flaming jet fuel to pour into the decks below.

It seems there are several versions of this story. Some mention that McCain was the only healthy person immediately airlifted from the ailing carrier along with the wounded, attributing this to the general anger the crew had toward him. I think it is pertinent to mention that his father was the admiral in charge of the Pacific Fleet at this time.

Was John McCain was being all Mavericky (contributing to the deaths of 134 men and injuries of 161 more), or was he just in the wrong place at the wrong time?

Vote Obama so I can attack from the Left. (updated)

Seriously.  I want him to win so we can start moving the Overton Window left.  I harbor no illusions that he will be anything but an able Captain to the Imperial Ship.  Unfortunately, this is what the alternative represents:

Teh fine print sez:

*do not consult your doctor. tie the rope tight. do not try this at home. go somewhere where noone will find you. do consume alcohol while using this treatment. do sedate yourself. do not care. do not say goodbye.do it now.*
*results not guaranteed

Disgusting. Not to mention childish and barely coherent.  Paleo, indeed.
Washington Scandal has the inside story.

This kind of filth should be responded to with swift and decisive action from Law Enforcement/Secret Service.  C’mon, the 20 year-old who hacked into Sarah Palin’s account is being threatened with jail time.  I’d like to see the maker of this purposefully provocative incident swing from his own noose.

You Reap What You Sow.

Update: Check out this comment from the fascist assclown who made this little gem:

For what it is worth, I am NOT, nor have I ever been a racist. I have zero against Obama. I just don’t agree with his politics.

Tell that to the kid that faces 5 years for hacking an e-mail account that should have been on a secure government server in the first place. Asshole.

I’m in a bad mood.(Updated)

A really bad mood.  Angry, even.

I said it last week and I’ll say it again.  I want blood.  Not metaphorical blood.  Not rhetorical blood.  Honest to goodness blood.

I want to see Nuremberg-style trials.  I want to see gallows erected on Wall Street.  I want to see motherfuckers swing from a rope, by their necks, for their crimes against the world.

Too harsh you say?  Then how about we release all nonviolent drug offended and replace them with every last cocksucker that knowingly set up our financial situation in such a precariously unstable way.

Why do the richest get to skate away home-free, but we have to bear the brunt of their crisis?  Case in point:

Less than a week after the government bailed out AIG, the company sent executives on a $440,000 resort retreat, lawmakers investigating the company’s meltdown said Tuesday.

The tab included $23,380 worth of spa treatments for AIG employees at the coastal St. Regis resort south of Los Angeles even as the company tapped into an $85 billion loan from the government it needed to stave off bankruptcy.

There’s a place to start. Let’s get a list of everyone who went on that retreat and punish them. I am so sick of free-market economics for the middle class on down, and socialism for the rich. It is time to draw a line in the sand.

I want blood.

Update: It was pointed out ot me in the comments that I may have unwittingly maligned a whole class of people.  I want to make it clear that I meant no offense to any Cocksucker-Americans that may have read this post.  I would like to go on record that I fully support their movement’s efforts.

Quote of the Day

It is impossible to be scientific here; for in calling other human beings “savage” or “barbarous” we may be expressing no objective fact, but only our fierce fondness for ourselves, and our timid shyness in the presence of alien ways.
